Tenth of Blogmas: Pretty Little Liars Holiday Episode- Recap + Review

SPOLIER ALERT! If you haven't watched the latest PLL episode, be aware that there will be spoilers everywhere. I did warn you.

Pretty Little Liars never fails to get me squished up in the corner of my room with a pillow over my eyes, yelling at one of the characters to hide or get down or just plan and simple, 'GET THE HECK OUT!.' And this Christmas Special episode was no different.
Since it was Christmas themed, I expected joy and festivities, but this episode was pretty depressing what with dead people showing up left right and centre, hooded figures in white and black, horrible Christmas flashbacks and yet again, creepy plastic PLL-classic masks- more like Halloween to be honest.

Last episode catch up: Mona and Spencer found out that Alison might know Bethany, Spencer was arrested on suspicion of killing Bethany, Toby was hit by a car, and finally Mona was killed by A ( or Alison?) just as she was telling Aria that Alison lured Bethany to Rosewood because she knew about her mother's affair. Oh and Alison created an army of her own.

So this time, the Liars are out on a shopping trip when Hanna receives a package from Mona's lawyer which contains a map of Ali's house with all her favourite hiding spots as well as a note from Mona to encourage the girls to keep on looking for answers; they come up with the idea that takes centre stage for the episode to raid Ali's house to find evidence to prove that Ali knew Bethany, even after A sends them a warning message in a snow globe.

It gets creepy from there when Alison goes through an Ebenezer Scrooge experience when dead Mona visits her to show her the Ghosts of Christmas Past and Future ( I think Mona's look was a little more scary than glamorous to be honest, she looked like something out of the Rocky Horror Show!). The vision revealed that Alison's mother was quite manipulative, even when Ali was young by convincing her to lie about finding two dresses wrapped as gifts in her piano.

On Christmas Eve, the Liars attend Alison's Holiday Ball with their baes and look pretty good while doing it. The plan is to keep Ali at the ball while Spencer and Hanna go to the house and Aria, Emily, Paige and the boys stay on Ali patrol, while Toby plays lame spy with a spy camera from his window keeping an eye on the house snooping.

Alison arrives with four new minions on her arm, two of which are identical twins, and proceeds to kiss Santa Claus in a back room, spotted by Aria. It turns out that a lot of people felt like dressing up as Santa for evening, including Lucas and Holbrook, though the most likely match is Holbrook.

A hooded figure at the party turns out to be Cece who has returned to wish Ali a Happy Holiday and in order not to be seen leaving, Ali and Cece hire the creepy twins as decoys. Emily follows the other two minions into a side room and they turn out to be Sydney and Jenna, siding with Alison to "protect" themselves.

Meanwhile, Hanna and Spencer are playing Chinese Whispers in Ali's house and then- in my opinion- they do the one thing you should never do if you are starring in a creepy TV show: split up to look for clues (too Scooby Doo I think).  And so obviously, low and behold, Hooded A with a huge kitchen knife appears. At the ball, the boys alert Toby that Ali has left the party, who then tries to warn Spencer and Hanna to leave the house. Upstairs Hanna finds a fake passport and a letter from Bethany to Alison by  piecing clues together and is knocked out by A.

After the ball, Alison is taken on her Christmas Future trip to a church where Creepy Mona shows her a coffin with Alison's legless body inside and a Black Widow, who turns out to be Mrs D who warns Alison that "they'll be coming for you." Ali has a frightening moment when she asks if she will be going to hell, ghostly voices start talking, she frantically tries to leave and then Mona wakes her out of her dream with a "Wake up b***, it's Christmas, and I promise, you don't want to miss it."

Over at Spencer's, the Liars and their significant others dress down for Toby's Holiday 'gesture' and enjoy dinner together on Christmas ( my favourite scene!) while Ali watches outside alone. Just a smidgen of sympathy for Ali here.
In the last scene, the Liars find a Christmas Tree outside and an ominous holiday greeting in Christmas lights from none other than.. Santa ClAus.

T H O U G H T S
I was scared as usual, but I was expecting a little more drama on this very hyped up episode. I am most impressed with the Liars dresses ( I think Emily always looks the most stunning) but I am as confused as ever about who A could be?  Just for the sake of it, I'll say that A seems to be playing the twin act; the whole flashback with the lie about the dresses is the clue for this.  I, along with everyone else most probably, believe that that dress was for Bethany ( I think that the show could be going down the original book plot twin route where Bethany is Ali's twin and was killed by Ali out of jealousy or the current Ali is Bethany who killed Ali and took over her life...confused?). Mona didn't say anything to Alison about possibly killing her (why?) so now I'm not to sure if it was Ali.  Holbrook is clearly involved in some way but I don't know yet if he is another Ezra- painted to look bad, but is really just a character with good intentions.
Worst characters of the episode were the Bad Santas: Holbrook for being unprofessionally inappropriate with Aria and Lucas for his atrocious Saint Nick impression and failure to do one simple job keeping Alison in sight.

Kudos to the best character Hanna who told that little bully girl at the daycare where to go, ran into A and survived and took on Ali's loft alone, finding a key piece of evidence. Next time I want to know what happened to Cece and why Alison is a pro at archery- surely the effort to include Hanna finding that certificate in the locked chest had to mean something! I also really want to see Mona again, I actually ahve to admit I miss her character.
Bring on January, down with A!

Be sure to let me know what you thought of yesterday's episode: who do you think A is, who was best dressed at the ball and who had the most power in the episode?
